write a catchy title

Don't judge a book by its cover is all well-intentioned. But, I am kinda turned off by blindly choosing books with titles that have no intrigue or sound confusing. So, how do you IMPOSSIBLY summarize your book and capture prospective readers with a title?!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, The Post-Birthday World. The list of excellent titles is endless, and does provide a base for inspiration. Because it makes sense that we're likely to be drawn to titles that are reminiscent of titles we've loved.

I haven't given a ton of thought to the title beyond my initial thought: The Protectress. I still like the simplicity of it, but in the midst of reading, I decided to try an exercise to list some various nouns, adjectives and locations to play with new title ideas.

Here's what I came up with:

  1. The Protectress

  2. The Protectress of the Silvis

  3. The Protectress of Star's End

  4. The Chosen Protectress of Star's End

  5. Protectress of the Night Sky

  6. The Seven Protectresses of the Silvis

  7. The Seven

  8. Luna the Protectress

  9. Luna of the Night Sky

  10. The Protectress in the Silvis

  11. Luna and the Protectresses

  12. The Protectress and the Silvis

  13. The Door in the Silvis

  14. The Protectresses of the Door

  15. The Protectress Cloaked in Shadows

  16. The Protectress in the Moonlight

  17. The Protectress in the Moon

  18. Luna and the Moon

More will probably come to mind, but these flowed out easily. Definitely still feel like I'm leaning one way (which way is that?!?!? can you guess??), but with a plan for three more books in the story, it's worth exploring how the first title will shape the others.

If any of these titles pop out at you, let me know in the comments below!
